KNOTTER, John Calvin
John Calvin Knotter, 96, of Bloomfield, died suddenly Wednesday, (May 7, 2003) at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, Connecticut after a heart attack, surrounded by his family. Born September 9, 1906, in Woolstock, IA, the fifth of six children born to the Reverend James Gerard Knotter and Lucie Bertha Baechler Knotter, he grew up in the Midwest and graduated in 1928 with an A.B. in Sociology from Park College in Parkville, MO. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946, in the U.S. and Britain, in Fleet Air Wing-7, retiring with the rank of Commander. He met and married his beloved wife of 57 years, Winifred Day Knotter, in London. An avid outdoorsman, he skied Sun Valley in the 1930's, was a member of Chicago's Black Horse Troop, played tennis into his eighties and golf into his nineties. After 47 years as a securities analyst in the banking and insurance industries, he retired to Hack's Neck, VA to sail and farm. He served on the board and as President of the Carolina, Clinchfield, and Ohio Railway from 1971-1982, overseeing its merger with CSX. He was a faithful communicant of St. Peter's Church, Morristown, NJ and St. George's Church, Pungoteague, VA, where he served as Warden. He is survived by his wife, Winified; his daughters, Susan V. Walton; his former son-in-law, Anthony J. Walton; his grandsons, Philip A. Walton and Charles N. Walton; his granddaughter-in-law, Allison Peers Walton; and many nieces and nephews. A much beloved husband, father and grandfather, he quietly taught us that ``love is patient, love is kind.'' A Memorial Eucharist will be held in the chapel at Seabury Retirement Community, 400 Seabury Drive, Bloomfield, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May I7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seabury or to St. George's Episcopal Church, Pungoteague, VA. Carmon Windsor Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
