Former Alaska resident Ley Kahl, 83, died Jan. 18, 2000, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he was being treated for injuries he received in an automobile accident near Bemidji, Minn. Memorial services were held Jan. 22 at the United Methodist Church in Fosston. Military honors were provided by the Wildrice VFW Post 1226 of Bejou, Minn. Mr. Kahl was born Aug. 6, 1916, in Woolstock, Iowa, to David and Eva (Lyon) Kahl. At age 8, he moved with his family to Cisco, Minn. After the eighth grade, he attended school in Erskine, Minn., until the family moved to Fosston, where he graduated from high school. In 1939, Mr. Kahl joined the U.S. Army and was three days short of discharge when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Thus, he remained in the service until the end of World War II with his primary station being Hawaii. After his honorable discharge, he attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, earning a bachelor's degree in agriculture. While attending school, he was married to Beatrice Walters. Following graduation, Mr. Kahl taught agriculture to veterans in Kensel, N.D. In 1951, he and Bea moved to Fosston, where he taught agriculture in the high school for four years. In 1955, they moved to the Leech Lake area, where he taught science in Boy River for two years. In 1957, the family moved to Huslia, Alaska (in the interior), where he taught fifth through eighth grade and kept the light generator running. For about the next 18-19 years, he and Bea taught in many rural villages throughout Alaska. They retired to the farm in Heier Township, south of Fosston. His family said: ''Ley enjoyed life. He enjoyed people and encouraged each one to use their mind and talents to learn and grow and do their best. He was the definitive storyteller and will be greatly missed.'' Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Darlene Skoglund of Anchorage, ArIa Kahl of Fairbanks, and Margaret and Herb Reynolds of Ephrata, Wash.; grandchildren, Alexande and Kahl Skoglund, Lura Noss, and Michael and Matthew Reynolds; brother, Gerald Kahl of Rochester, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bea; parents; brother, Donald Kahl; and an infant sister. Arrangements were by Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston.
