Kirby Edward Graves, 74, passed from this life on Thursday, August 25, 2005 at his home in Grimes. Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. Monday, August 29, at Brandt Funeral Home in Dallas Center, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30, at the United Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Water Street and Oak Street in Goldfield, Iowa, where he was a former member. There will be an additional visitation from 12 noon until the service hour on Tuesday, at the church. Interment will take place at Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield.
Kirby was born on April 27, 1931 to Edward Francis and Pearl Bardell Griffith Graves in Goldfield. He had attended school in Goldfield. For four years, Kirby served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, until he was honorably discharged. Kirby married Charlene Doris Thompson. Their marriage was blessed with five daughters, Pearl, Brenda, Luann, Diane and Melanie. In 1967, Kirby and Charlene moved their family from the Goldfield and Clarion areas to Grimes, where they made their home. He was self-employed as a truck driver. Kirby enjoyed collecting stamps, coins, pens and miniature antique cars and trucks. Most of all, he loved being with his family and having them around.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his five daughters, Pearl Miller and her husband Ralph of Newton, Brenda Floyd and her husband Ed of Grimes, Luann Olson and her husband Steve of Walnut, Diane Morrison and her husband Larry of Monroe and Melanie Muir and her husband Dave of Rippey; three sisters, Noreen Elberg and her husband Charles of Eagle Grove, Mary Thompson and her husband Hans of Goldfield and Maggie Martin of Clarion; one sister-in-law, Patty Johnson and her husband Stan of Perry; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Kirby was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene D. Graves; his parents; one brother, Daryl 'Pete' Graves; one sister, Patricia Fletcher; and one granddaughter at infancy.Des Moines Register, The (IA)
