Harold Otis Gangstead was born to Hans and Hannah Gangstead on September 9, 1917 in rural Goldfield, Iowa. He was educated in the rural school system and at Goldfield High School. He received solid Christian education at home and from the congregation at Lake Lutheran Church in rural Goldfield. He married Ruth Evelyn Lee in June of 1940. He subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served for two and one-half years in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
Two daughters were born to Harold and Ruth, Sandra Lee and Jane Ellen. The family made their home for many years in Eagle Grove, IA, where Harold was a long-time employee of Iowa Public Service (IPS). After Harold's retirement, he and Ruth moved to Sioux Falls, SD. Harold loved to play golf every summer. He also sang with the Legion Chorus in Sioux Falls. He enjoyed his family and friends. Harold is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 65 years. He is also survived by a sister, Enid Novy of Wisconsin. His two daughters, Sandra Boade and Jane Braughton, also survive. Grandchildren include Johannah Braughton, Erin Boade, Garth Boade (Heather), Allison Abitz (Bill), and Tait Boade; great grandchildren surviving are Alana and Ashley Boade. Harold was preceded in death by his sisters, Olive Hooker, Mable Berkland, Esther Harvey and Agnes Stockdale. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Owen Gangstead, and a grandson, Jonathan Boade. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, with burial in Rosehill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, IA. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Gangstead, 87, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Eagle Grove and Goldfield, died Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church in-Eagle Grove with Rev. Paul Stone officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.
