A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 1995, in the United Methodist Church in La Grande, Oregon. Mrs. Smith died March 19 of complications from strokes at age 83. She was born June 25, 1911, in Melvin, Ill., and grew up in Goldfield, Iowa. Her maiden name was Foster. She graduated from Simpson College in 1933. She married Merle C. in 1937 in Iowa where they lived until they moved to Oregon in 1950. Mr. Smith died in 1982. She taught music at all grade levels in Iowa before teaching first grade in La Grande. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. Surviving are daughters, Janet Judd of Inchelium, Wash., and Janie A. Smith of Portland; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery in LaGrande.
