A funeral for Esther Johanna Van Patten will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in All Saints Espicopal Church. Burial will follow in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Van Patten died of causes related to age Sunday in her Southeast Portland home. She was 74. Mrs. Van Patten was born on July 31, 1917, in Goldfield, Iowa. Her maiden name was Jeppsen. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Barrington, Ill., where, in 1935, she graduated from Barrington High School. She married Cecil Robert Van Patten on Dec. 25, 1940, in Reno, Nev. The couple moved to Ontario, where they owned and operated a chiropractic clinic for 40 years. Mrs. Van Patten graduated from Treasure Valley Community College in 1979, with an associate degree in liberal arts. The couple retired in 1983 and moved to Portland. Mr. Van Patten died on Aug. 18, 1989. Mrs. Van Patten was active in Democratic Party politics. She was a member of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Ontario and of All Saints Episcopal Church in Portland. Survivors include her daughters, Kay Mason and Janet Gallagher, both of Portland; sons, George of Portland and Bob of Corvallis; sister, Ellen Jeppsen, of Portland; brothers Chris Jeppsen of Corvallis, Harold Jeppsen of Wheatherly, Pa., Kenneth Jeppsen of West Chicago, Ill., and Donald Jeppsen of Barrington, Ill.; and four grandchildren. The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to All Saints Episcopal Church or to the Ontario Ore-Ida Judo Club.
