Dr. Richard J. Kist, age 73 of Clinton, died Monday, March 15, 2004, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Grave-side services will be held Saturday 1:00 PM at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, IA. Visitation will be held Friday 2-8 PM at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Clinton Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.
Richard was born on April 16, 1930 in Eagle Grove, IA, the son of Joseph and Verna (Klaas) Kist. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1948 and the College of Dentistry in 1950 from the University of Iowa. He received his Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Certificate from the University of Iowa in 1959. Since 1997, he served as Adjunct Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Iowa, where he was Adjunct of the Year in 1999. He became Board Certified with the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in 1964. Dr. Kist had two papers published in the Journal of Oral Surgery in 1964 and the Iowa Dental Journal in 1984. Dr. Kist is survived by his wife Phyllis, four daughters, Mrs. Mary (Mel) McIntyre of Clinton and their children, Matthew and Meredith; Mrs. Deborah (Jim) Israel of Germany and their children, Michael, Dan, and Brian; Mrs. Susan (Mike) Smith of Bear, DE and their children, Nevada and Natalia; Mrs. Caroline (Scott) Ebensberger of Clinton and their children, Cari and Erica; his brother, John (his wife Ruth) Kist of Downers Grove, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.
