Jeannette Van Houten, age 85, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center following a stroke on June 12, 2006. Jeannette was born on March 30, 1921, in Bennett, Iowa to parents Anna and John Vaughan. She grew up in Bennett before graduating from high school. She attended college at Iowa State University where she majored in home economics. Subsequent to graduation, she taught school in Hansell, Iowa where she met her husband, Robert Van Houten. They were married on June 15, 1948. They were long time residents of Eagle Grove, Iowa where Robert (Bob) was a coach and high school teacher and Jeannette was a home maker and substitute teacher. Supporting Bob in his coaching endeavors and having played basketball in high school, she became an avid sports fan of not only basketball, but football and baseball as well. She was preceded in death by Bob, who died in 1976, after which she moved from Eagle Grove to be close to her only son, Bruce and his wife Becky. Jeannette lived in Columbus, Georgia for four years before moving to Madison, where she has resided since 1992. In addition to her interests in sports, she has been an active member of the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove and Columbus and with Bethany United Methodist Church in Madison until slowed in recent years by Alzheimer's disease. She was a member of PEO both in Columbus and Madison. She was also interested in sewing, knitting, and other crafts, and enjoyed playing bridge. She is survived by her son, Bruce; her sister, Arline; grandchildren, Emily and Phil; and great-grandson Aimon. Services will be held on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at 11 a.m., at BETHANY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 3910 Mineral Point Road, Madison. The service will be preceded by visitation at the church beginning at 10 a.m. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Bob, on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the Hampton, Iowa cemetery following a service of interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in Jeannette's name to Alzheimer's Association, South Central Wisconsin Chapter, 517 N. Segoe Rd. No. 301, Madison, WI 53705.
