Perry G. Paine died Feb. 27, 2006, at Columbine Manor, where he was an Alzheimer's resident for the past two months. Perry was born Sept. 27,1934, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, son of Avanelle and Gordon Paine. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in sociology and anthropology. He married Betty Jane Westwick in 1958. He moved to Michigan with his family, son David and daughter Lynn, and lived in the Birmingham/Bloomfield Hills area for over 30 years. In 1995 he and Betty retired in Buena Vista. Perry was senior associate with United Community Services for 27 years, coordinating research and planning for ethnic and cultural programs in metropolitan Detroit. He later formed his own research company. Perry's interests were many and varied. He planned family travel adventures throughout the U. S. and Canada, instilling a deep appreciation of the environment in his children through wilderness tent camping and hiking. He pursued a lifetime interest in genealogy and traveled to England several times tracing his Paine family to the late 1500s. He entertained his grandchildren and others with his playful wit. He enjoyed classical music, old movies, golf and all areas of science. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Buena Vista; son David (Karen) Paine of Salida; daughter Lynn (Hugh) Rees-Jones; grandchildren Mitchell and Joshua of West Jefferson, N.C.; sister Patricia Forrest of South Amboy, N.J.; and six nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held March 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home of Carolyn and Barry Hayes.
