FALLS TO HIS DEATH FROM HEART ATTACK
George Schumacher Keels Off Roof After Extinguishing Small Blaze
This community was greatly shocked Friday morning to learn of the instant death of George Schumacher, one of its well known citizens. Mr. Schumacher had climbed to the roof of his residence to put out a small blaze, no larger than his hand. He secured a ladder and placed it against the storm porch at the back door.Once on top of the porch he pulled the ladder after him and placed it higher up on the roof where he could reach the blaze. He soon extinguished the fire and returned to the roof of the storm porch. As he was about to descend the ladder to the ground he suddenly collapsed, due to heart failure, falling head foremost to the cement walk below, a distance of eight or ten feet. It is thought death was instantaneous.George Schumacher, son of Charles and Anna E. Schumacher, was born February 27, 1855 in LaSalle County IL. He departed this life April 2, 1926, aged 71 years, 1 month, and 6 days.In early life he attended school in Ford County and later studied at a business college in Joliet. He was united in marriage to Alice E. Huntley November 9, 1887 at McHenry, IL where he engaged in the contracting business with his brother, Edward C. Schumacher. In 1901, Mr. Schumacher moved to Clarion and continued in the contracting business, doing most of the cement work in this locality for many years. Mr. Schumacher was a man of high ideals and well known for his honesty and fairness in his dealings. He served the city as councilman for three years and rendered excellent service. He became a member of the Masonic fraternity forty-four years ago at Cabery, IL. The Clarion lodge attended the funeral service in a body and had charge of the last rites at the grave. He leaves to mourn his passing a beloved wife, one brother, Edward, of Bellingham, WA and one sister, Maggie Schumacher of Kankakee, IL and several nephews and nieces. In the death of Mr. Schumacher the community loses one of its honored citizens, one whom all held in high esteem. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. H O Spelman of the Congregational Church. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.
