Dr. Harold B. Bjornson, a native of Goldfield, Iowa, died at Pilgrim Haven in Los Altos Jan. 21, 1996. He was 79. A memorial Service was held Sunday at Pilgrim Haven retirement community in Los Altos.
His education started in a one-room school house and continued at Sioux Falls College and Iowa State College. He earned a doctorate from Berkeley Baptist Divinity School in 1963. Before his call to the ministry, he served as a forester in Idaho and Iowa, and spent four years in United States Coast Guard in the Pacific arena during World War II.
Dr. Bjornson began a distinguished career in the ministry as associate pastor of the First Baptist Church of Oakland, then served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Waterloo, Iowa, pastor of the First Baptist Church of McMinnville, Ore., pastor of the First Baptist Church of Palo Alto and most recently, following his retirement, as chaplain of Pilgrim Haven from 1981-1994.
He is survived by his wife, Miriam Eller Bjornson, three daughters, Mary Brown, Joyce Anderson, and Anita Stockton, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the American Baptist Seminary of the West, Los Altos, California.
