Eugene woman turns 100
Carole Fitzgerald of Eugene will celebrate her 100th birthday today at the Sheldon Oaks retirement center.
She was born Dec. 23, 1912, on a farm in Williams, Iowa, to Theodore and Opal Evans. She was raised on the farm and graduated from Dows High School in Dows, Iowa.
She has outlived five husbands, a sister and a son. She married her third husband in 1941. He was in the Merchant Marines and stationed on Catalina Island, Calif. She was a seamstress on the island, sewing patches and making alterations for sailors during World War II.
She has four children, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
“She is a self-taught woman, very independent and curious about life and the universe,” wrote her son, 69-year-old Jan Hamud of California, in an e-mail. “She is in exceptional health, helping others through nutrition to live a better life. She works out a couple of times a week in the gym at Sheldon Oaks.”
