CARL AND MATHILDA BUTENHOFF

Carl Butenhoff, who was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Butenhoff, was born July 10, 1892. He moved with his parents to the Baker area in 1902 from Dows, Iowa. Carl attended Barry School, District 114. He married Mathilda Riedel, daughter of Samuel and Emelia Riedel of Parkers Prairie. She was born Sept. 27, 1899. Mathilda came to the Sabin area in 1916 and worked at the Henry Resenfeldt farm. She and Carl were married March 9, 1920. They spent their first year living with Carl's folks. The house had burned down so they lived in the granary until the new house was built in the fall. In 1940 they bought a farm along the south branch of the Buffalo River where their son, Melvin now lives. Carl raised small grains, corn and potatoes. They had cows, chickens, geese, turkeys, pig and horses. Carl owned a threshing machine and threshed for his brothers and others in the community. He served on the school board for District 119. Some of the school teachers used to board and room at their place. When Carl and Tillie retired, they bought a house in Barnesville where Tillie still resides. Carl died in April of 1960.

They have five children: Mrs. Richard Young (Delores), of Grand Forks. Mrs. Grace Kara of Minneapolis. Melvin on the home farm. Floyd, who farms in Alliance Township. George of Lewistown, Montana.
