Lanny Ernest Nerlien, 64, of Champaign, passed away on July 5, 2011 at home. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 509 S. Mattis, Champaign. There was a visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign. Pastor Mark Elliott officiated. Burial will be held at a later date.
Lanny was born on March 28, 1947, in Fargo, N. D., a son to Lyle and Judy Tewten Nerlien. His mother survives. Mr. Nerlien graduated from Concordia Academy, St. Paul, Minn., in 1965. Shortly following he joined the United States Air Force, serving time in Thailand from 1966 to 1969. Lanny was a graduated of the University of Illinois, where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He was a local residential appraiser employed by Champaign Federal from 1984 to 1998. He retired from Whitsitt and Associates in 2010. Survivors include a daughter, Kari (James) May of Champaign; a son, Matthew Nerlien of Champaign; two brothers, Michael (Kathy) Nerlien of Burnsville, Minn., and Gary (June) Nerlien of Northwood, Iowa; and four grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Lyle Nerlien.
