Hazel (Reyerson) (Dralla) Shaw, 96, of Fargo, N.D., formerly of Northwood, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at the Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. A gathering of family and friends will be held Monday, June 6, at First Lutheran Church in Northwood, at 11 a.m.
Hazel was born May 9, 1915, to Roy and May (Brua) Reyerson in rural Northwood. She was baptized into the Christian faith on June 6, 1915, and confirmed on Aug. 3, 1930, at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, Northwood. She attended rural school and high school in Northwood. She married Leo G. Dralla at the Silver Lake Parsonage on Oct. 4, 1933. To their union two daughters were born. During World War II, Hazel and Leo moved to Eddystone, Pa., to work for the war effort. Leo welded ships and Hazel worked in the defense plant making parts for the ships. They were both active air-raid wardens for their community. Hazel enjoyed being active. She was always very active in her church wherever she lived, as a Sunday school teacher, participant in ladies aid as a member and officer, prayer group and singing in the choir. She loved her garden and flowers and always had plenty to share with neighbors and friends. She also served as a 4-H leader when her girls where in 4-H. Hazel was a very creative person. She enjoyed painting, quilting, crafts, crocheting, knitting, embroidery work and became a beautiful weaver of pillows and wall hangings and also wove many rugs. She also owned and operated Hazel's Drive-In as a family project when her girls where in High School. Hazel and Leo moved to Manchester, Iowa, in 1958, where they built many new homes. Leo and his crew would do the building and Hazel did all the painting and varnishing. Leo died Feb. 9, 1963, in Manchester. After his death she was invited to join a couple's bowling league and met Leonard Shaw. They were later married at First Lutheran Church in Manchester. They relocated to Inverness, Fla., where they took up golfing and their new-found hobby of polishing rocks and making beautiful jewelry which they sold every Saturday at the local flee market.
Golf became her main game and she had three holes-in-one which was amazing since she didn't start golfing until she was over 50. They also enjoyed water skiing and fishing. They moved back to Northwood in their later years to be closer to family. Leonard died on April 21, 2001, and Hazel then moved to Fargo, N.D. While in Fargo she enjoyed attending school events and musicals of her great grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Mavis E. (Ray) Wagner and Eileen H. Dahlby; grandchildren Deanna (Dahlby) Krull, Dale Dahlby, Miriam (Everett) Vogel, Reece (Alan) Klobe, Theta (Wade) Wagner-Miller and great grandchildren Jesse (Erin) Krull, Chad (Allyson) Krull, Leah and Amanda Vogel, Kendra Klobe, Clarissa and Quinn Wagner-Miller, step-children Sandra (Shaw) Groves and Kenneth (Kay) Shaw and their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Reyerson, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and May (Brua) Reyerson, husbands Leo Dralla and Leonard Shaw and her brother, Maurice Reyerson.
In the last few years she may have forgotten many things but she never forgot to pray. Alzheimer's disease may have taken her memory and finally her life but it can never take away our memory of her.
