KENSETT, IOWA - Donald L. Chodur, 90, of Kensett died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at his home in rural Kensett.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 22, at First Baptist Church in Forest City with Pastor Doug Snyder officiating. Burial will be at the Kensett Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and will continue an hour prior to service at the church.
Donald LeRoy Chodur was born on a farm north of Crystal Lake on Jan. 5, 1921, the son of Andrew and Alice (Hansen) Chodur. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City and attended Crystal Lake School. On Feb. 12, 1947, he was united in marriage to Gloria Genevieve Borg at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The couple farmed near Leland, Thompson and Miller. In 1967 the family moved to their present home near Kensett.
Donald enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada with his wife, family and friends. When his sons were active in 4-H he served as a 4-H leader. For many years, Don and Gloria were part of a neighborhood card club and enjoyed wintering in Phoenix, Ariz. Don enjoyed searching for antiques, was an avid collector and loved to "fix things up." He could always be counted on to help out his neighbors whenever they needed his assistance.
Don is survived by his seven children, Marjorie (H.B.) Ross of Garner, Richard (Rhonda) Chodur of Kensett, Larry (Ellen) Chodur of Rudd, Karen (Lewis) Thompson of Osseo, Wis., Joan (Troy) McCormick of Mason City, Michael Chodur of Charles City and Tami (Christopher) Thilges of La Crosse, Wis.; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Odella Broome of Des Moines, Mildred Bauer of Mason City, Gerri Hart of Arizona City, Ariz., Delores Norcross of Mason City and Irene King of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Kenneth Chodur of Kensett; and a special friend, Lila Dahl of Glenwood, Minn.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gloria; two grandchildren, Ashley and Kody Chodur; two sisters who died in infancy; three adult sisters, Melinda Mayo, Eileen Ballay and Betty Kaduce; and two brothers, James and Ralph Chodur.Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 641-585-2685, www.petersenlundfh.com .
