NORTHWOOD, IOWA - Kenneth Ellsworth "Kenny" Roppe, 86, Northwood, died Monday, April 18, 2011, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A funeral service for Kenny will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood, with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall and Pastor Dennis Hudson officiating. Burial will be in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, Northwood. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

Kenneth Ellsworth Roppe was born on June 21, 1924, the son of Elmer and Anna (Butler) Roppe. Kenny attended and received his education in the rural country school in Northwood. Kenny farmed with his parents on the family farm in rural Northwood before taking over the family farming operations.

Kenny was united in marriage to Gertrude Linne on Aug. 5, 1956, at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. She preceded him in death in January 1999.

Kenny and his family moved to Northwood in 1971, where Kenny began working for Carroll George in Northwood. Kenny also worked for several years on the street department for the City of Northwood and also worked as grounds keeper for the city at Sunset Rest Cemetery until his retirement.

Kenny loved and enjoyed his family and grandchildren, going fishing with his grandchildren, and also going to his daughter Karen on weekends in Lyle, Minn., to help them with their farming. Kenny also loved eating chocolates. Kenny was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Sherrie (Bryan) Winter of Rochester, Minn., Karen (Tony) Emanuel of Lyle, Minn., and Bonnie Roppe of Rochester, Minn.; six grandchildren, Brandon, Chad and Jared Emanuel, Heather Aldrich, and Devin and Brittany Winter; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Elaine (Ivan) Olson of Northwood; as well as other extended family members and friends; and Bonnie's dogs that were special to Kenny, Buddy and Sadie.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Gertrude, and a sister in died in infancy.
