Paul Herbert Barber, 79, of Northwood, passed away peacefully supported by his loving family on September 8, 2025. Paul’s wishes were to be cremated with a private burial. A celebration of life to honor his joyful legacy with extended family and friends will be held at a future date.
Paul H. Barber, son of Herbert and Marjorie (Arett) Barber, was born on December 25, 1945, in Albert Lea, MN. He was the second born of four children and was baptized at the Methodist Church, Gordonsville, MN. Throughout his childhood he worked on the family’s century farm in Gordonsville, until his graduation from Glenville High School in 1963. Upon graduating, he worked alongside his dad at the family business - Northwood Welding & Repair Service - until transitioning into the construction industry.
On September 21, 1965, Paul was united in marriage to Joan C. Thompson at the Methodist Church in Gordonsville. The couple was blessed with a family of two children; Diane and Tim. Paul began a career in construction in 1969 where he built water and wastewater treatment plants for 43 years (retired 2012). His career led the family to call a variety of places throughout the country home including Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, the Upper Peninsula, Dallas/Ft. Worth, and finally back to their roots in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Paul most enjoyed making memories with his two granddaughters and his family. Paul and Jo traveled to many destinations through their 60 years of marriage, taking the family to national parks, scenic byways, and overlooks. Paul and Jo’s home was always a place of welcome, hosting many family gatherings during the holidays and other special occasions. Paul took pleasure in sharing his passion for cooking through meals with loved ones, creating cherished memories of his kind and generous personality. Paul was an avid reader who had an interest in a wide variety of subjects and intellectual pursuits. He had a gift for telling captivating stories to the amusement of his family and friends; countless laughs were shared, and will continue to be shared, over his witticisms.
Paul will forever be cherished and remembered by his beloved wife of 60 years, Jo; two devoted children, Diane (Patrick) Neuzil and Tim (Katie) Barber; two loving granddaughters, Sloan Neuzil and Josie Barber; siblings, Barb (Art) Kuennen and Steve (Kathy) Barber; sister-in-law, Marge Barber; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends whose lives he impacted. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Marjorie, and brother Jack Barber.
