Valene Hargrave, 88, of Manly, died Friday (Nov. 26, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 East South Street, Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Manly Cemetery. According to Mrs. Hargrave’s wishes, her body has been cremated. Memorials may be directed to Bethel United Methodist Church, the Manly Public Library, the Manly Senior Center or Hospice of North Iowa.

Valene was born Dec. 15, 1915, in Casey, Iowa, one of five children of Elmer and Hazel (Bathurst) Floyd. She graduated from Casey High School in 1933 and attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, earning an elementary education teaching certificate. She taught third grade for four years in the Prescott Consolidated School System at Prescott, Iowa, and for two years in New Sharon, Iowa. From 1943 to 1945, Valene was employed as a fiscal accounting clerk in the 11th Naval Disbursing Office in San Diego, Calif.

On March 16, 1944, Valene was united in marriage to Lawrence Hargrave in New Sharon, Iowa. They owned and operated Quality Dry Cleaners in Prairie Du Chien, Wis., for three years before moving to Manly in 1949 to own and operate Hargrave Cleaners. Valene worked as a secretary for the North Central Public Schools from 1965 until her retirement.

She was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Mystery Circle, was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, was a longtime member of the Pioneer Town and Country Club and belonged to several bridge clubs. Valene enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, reading, golfing, and ceramics. She was also a huge University of Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Valene will be greatly missed by her two daughters and their spouses, Val and Gary Brunsvold of Manly and Vicki and Mark Jennings of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Mitzi Brunsvold of Iowa City, Blayne Brunsvold and Blair Brunsvold, both of Manly, Aaron Jennings of Colorado and Neil Jennings of Iowa City; a brother, Veryl Floyd, of Prairie Du Chien, Wisc.; and two sisters, Jeanne Miskulin and her husband, Nick, of Hibbing, Minn., and Juanita Quaal of Lakeville, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Vincent Floyd.
