Obituary – Jewett
Ceviah S. Moore was born January 24, 1810 at Sidney, Maine, and was married to Frederick A. Jewett in Boston, Mass., August 22, 1833. She died at Polo, IA., January 22, 1889. Her death bed was surrounded by all of her family living, save her oldest daughter, Mrs. E. H. Phillips, now living at Pine Grove, Wis., and by her neighbors and friends, who did everything in their power to alleviate her sufferings. She was the mother of four daughters and three sons, two of whom, a son and a daughter, died in infancy and are buried at Waukesha, Wis.
The most of her married life was passed in Wisconsin, principally upon the frontier, where life’s duties are always arduous, and privations not a few. She lived for her loved ones, and the needy, sick and suffering around her; and the opportunity to do a kind deed or to speak a kind word was always improved by her. Hers was a life of doing rather than professing good. She followed the “meek and lowly Jesus” in “seeking not her own but other’s good.” Self was always the last to serve. During the latter years failing health and strength kept her close at home. We knew that we must lose her, yet when the parting came the sorrow was almost unbearable. The mother’s heart and willing hands are still at last in death! But her life, as remembered by her children and loved ones, is a sweet perfume. A large and sorrowing congregation met to pay their last tribute of respect, and gently laid her to rest in the new cemetery at Kensett.
