Gladys A. Schachterle, 81, of 304 13th Street South, Northwood, died Monday, August 1, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, August 5, 2005, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Reverend Wayne Hagen officiating. Interment was at the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. Visitation was held at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood. Family suggests memorials to be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Gladys Alvina Schachterle was born June 15, 1924, in Jackson, Minnesota, the daughter of George and Carrie (Speckman) Koeder. She received her education from the Ackley High School. Upon completing her education, Gladys helped her family with their bakery in Ackley. She was united in marriage to Robert Schachterle on October 15, 1944, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After Robert was honorably discharged from the US Navy, Gladys and Robert began working for the Koeder Resorts in Blackduck, MN, in the spring and summer, and in the winter they worked at the Ackley Bakery, until moving to Northwood in 1949. In 1949, they purchased and operated the Northwood Bakery, which they operated for 33 years until their retirement in 1982. Gladys enjoyed playing cards; she was involved with several card clubs, including her “Friday Gang" for cards every Friday and every other Tuesday she played bridge with a group of ladies. Gladys had a passion for gardening, cooking, and flowers. She also participated in the Northwood Bowling League, which she bowled for the Northwood Bakery. Gladys looked forward to wintering in Texas, which she has done since her retirement, and spending time with her family and friends. Gladys was a member of the First Lutheran Church; where she was active in the Lydia Circle for many years, and the Northwood Women's Auxiliary VFW.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons; Michael Schachterle and his wife Crystal, Chanhassen, MN; and Dennis Schachterle, Lake Mills; a granddaughter, Tanya Reader and her husband Dr. Nathan, Bloomington, MN; two great-grandsons, Michael and Erick Reader; two brother-in-laws, Fredrick Schachterle and his wife Phyllis, Ackley; William Schachterle and his wife Donna, Geneva; and a sister-in-law, Emily Schachterle, Oscoda, MI.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, in 1994, son Kevin, in 2004, a brother, Elmer Koeder and sister, Esther Fistler.
