Memorial services for Howard James Bakken of Plymouth, IA, was held Friday, Aug. 13, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Hwy 65 South, Northwood. Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating. Interment took place at the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. Howard died Wednesday, Aug. 11 at the Good Sheperd Health Center, under Hospice Care, in Mason City Ia. at the age of 78.

Howard was born Oct.1, 1925 in Northwood, IA, to Ole O. and Clara (Vold) Bakken. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. Howard married Janice Johnson, June 5, 1948 at Silver Lake Lutheran Church.

He was a salesperson at Gildners in Northwood and transferred to Cresco and had his own Gildner Store. He then returned to Northwood and worked at J.C. Penny in Mason City where he made many friends. In later years, he also worked at Price Motors in Mason City. He later was forced to retire due to a stroke but kept up his passion of having coffee with friends and sharing his baked goods and gardening products. Howard loved people and had many friends with whom he had coffee with daily. Marla Gaubatz was a very faithful friend and very much appreciated by Howard and his family.

Howard will be sadly missed by his three daughters: Dianne Meyers and her husband Chuck of Plymouth, Connie Suby and her husband Mark of Mason City, Nancy Serdahl of Naples, Florida; six grandchildren, Suzanne (Gary) Miller, Michelle (Jared) Hendershot, Heather Suby, Jason (Sarah) Suby, Ben Serdalh and Shane Serdahl; Two great grandchildren, Benjamin Miller and Nicholas Miller and Special friend Mavis Beenan. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the Good Shepard Activity Department. Schoeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, IA, was in charge of the arrangements.
