February 13, 1924 - January 28, 2018

Shirley Rith (nee Dwelle) Vorland, 93, of Northwood passed away Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Northwood United Methodist Church, 1000 First Ave. North, with Reverend Rob Lanphere officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2018 at Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 1st Ave South, Northwood. A service will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel by the Eastern Star Northern Light Chapter, Northwood. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Memorials can be directed in care of her family.

Shirley Ruth Dwelle was born on February 13, 1924 to Charles Horace and Alice Alberta (White) Dwelle at their home in Northwood. Shirley graduated from Northwood High School in 1942. She continued her education in business at Coe College and worked at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids.

Later she worked in Admissions at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where she was introduced to her future husband, Howard Vorland. They were married on December 28, 1947 in Northwood. To this union four children were born, James, Tom, Jeanine, and Marianne. For many years Shirley worked in the Iowa Department of Human Services until her retirement in 1992.

Shirley was involved in the Northwood community. She was a member of Helen Hinman Dwelle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Chapter ES of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Northern Light Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and Semper Fidelis. She was an active member at the United Methodist Church, singing in the choir, serving as the choir director and in the United Methodist Women. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Shirley and Howard enjoyed playing in bridge club, camping and traveling together. They visited all 50 states and all of the Canadian provinces. Shirley loved music. In 1936 she played cornet in the Northwood High School Band directed by L.T. Dillon that won the National Championship, and later in life sang in the Worth County Chorus.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, James (Mary) Vorland of Preston, IA, Tom (Joan) Vorland of Northwood, IA, Jeanine Vorland of Blooming Prairie, MN, and Marianne (T.A.) Sandberg of Manchester, IA; grandchildren, Michael (Andrea) Vorland of Jersey City, NJ, David (Megan) Vorland of Washington, D.C., Ryne (Theresa) Isidora of Rochester, MN, Daniel (Sarah) Sandberg of Ames, IA, and Steven (Katie Brooks) Sandberg of Manchester, IA; brothers-in-law, Richard and Kenneth Vorland; sisters-in-law Florence, Mavis, Virginia, and Marlene Vorland, as well as many nieces and nephews, and her lifelong friend, Becky Johnston of Northwood.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Howard, parents, Charles and Alice Dwelle, siblings, Horace (DeLorraine) Dwelle, Arlene (Dr. Dean) Dutton, Dorothy Dwelle, and Alberta Dwelle.
