August 24, 1930 - June 26, 2017

Manly, Iowa - Raymond James Aves, 86, Manly, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017, his 64th wedding anniversary.

A funeral mass for Ray will be held 10:30 A.M. Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 North Broadway, Manly, with Reverend Neil Manternach officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring Street, Manly. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly with military honors conducted by members of the Edward-Tosel American Legion Post 110, Manly.

Ray was born on August 24, 1930, to Lyell and Marie (Hennies) Aves in Mason City. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City, and attended Mason City Schools and Manly High School, graduating from Manly High School in 1948. In November 1950, Ray enlisted in the Air Force and based in Japan, Morocco, England and various US bases around the country, finishing his tour of duty at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona.

On June 26, 1953, he married Mary Helen Smith at Sacred Heart Rectory in Manly. After his honorable discharge in November 1954, Ray and Mary moved to Manly. They were blessed with three children: Marty William, Amy Leigh, and Judy Lynne. After his time in the military, Ray worked at Jacob E. Decker and North Central Schools, retiring in 1994. Ray was active in many organizations including Manly Town Council, a leader in Webelo Boy Scouts, the Manly Volunteer Fire Department, the Edward-Tosel American Legion Post 110, of Manly, Pioneer Town and Country Club, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

He, along with his wife Mary could always be found attending their children's and grandchildren's school events.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Aves and their children, Marty (Sandy) Aves and Amy (Steve) Wendt; his grandchildren, Allison (Paul Isham) Bair, Joanna (Andrew) Weinberg, and Will Bird; his great-grandchildren, Laila and Mason Weinberg. He is also survived by six siblings, Lavonne (Roger) Clagett, Lila Johnston, Jeanette (Harold) Galligan, Linda (Ozzie) Dahle-Melsaether, Rick Aves and Sue Aves; his sisters-in-law, Pat (Terry) Field and Deb McArthur and brother-in-law, Ed (Aljean) Smith; and son-in-law, Mike Bird, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Bird, his parents, his in-laws, Lloyd and Mary Smith; brothers LuVerne Aves and his wife Arline, and Bob Aves; his sisters, Shirley and her husband Gerald Wohler, Donna and her husband Ray Olson and brother-in-law, Bob Johnston. Also preceding him in death were two nieces, Wendy (Marty) Kochevar and Debbie Olson.
