Opal E. Payne, 91, of Hanlontown, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 1995) at her daughter's home near Joice. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, 302 E. Fourth St., with the Rev. Linda Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to services at the church, Monday. Memorials may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church, 302 E. Fourth St., Hanlontown, Iowa 50444.

Opal E. Payne was born Jan. 9, 1904 at Galva, the daughter of Joseph Christensen and Selma Christensen (nee) Johannsen. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Joice. She was educated in country school in Danville Township.

She married Lyle E. Payne on Dec. 24, 1927, at Grace Evangelical Free Church, Mason City. They farmed east of Hanlontown until 1948. Lyle and Opal operated Payne's Cafe in Hanlontown for a short time. Later they moved to Mason City, where Opal worked at Good Shepherd Nursing Home. In 1951 they moved to acreage at Hanlontown, where Opal was employed as a cook at the school, until retiring at age 65. They moved from the acreage to a home in Hanlontown.

She enjoyed gardening, canning, freezing, making Afghans and quilting. She loved her family and her many friends. For many years, she enjoyed her membership in the Friendly Neighbor Club at Hanlontown.

Opal is survived by her husband, Lyle E. Payne; one daughter, Dolores Brunsvold and her husband, Ralph, of Joice; one grandson, David Brunsvold and his wife, Sara, of Northwood; one granddaughter, Diane Anderson and her husband, Paul, of Hanlontown; four great-grandchildren, Trisha and Nathan Anderson, and Amy and Matthew Brunsvold; a sister-in-law, Wava Christensen, Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents; one brother, Clifford Christensen; three sisters, Anna Christensen, Agnes Payne and Estella Mostrom; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Anne Brunsvold, preceded her in death.
