NORTHWOOD — Milo P. “Buck” Pangburn, 84, Northwood, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A funeral service for Buck Pangburn was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2016, at the United Methodist Church, 1000 First Ave. North, Northwood, with Rev. Rob Lanphere officiating.

Burial was in the State Line Cemetery, rural Northwood, with full military honors conducted by members of Our Buddies Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6779, Northwood.

Milo P. “Buck” Pangburn was born on March 19, 1932, on the family century farm, rural Northwood, the son of Milo Wesley and Marjorie (Gabriel) Pangburn. Buck was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Northwood Baptist Church. He attended rural country school, and graduated from Northwood High School in 1950.

He was united in marriage to Beverly Hicks of Gordonsville, MN, on Nov. 7, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Northwood, and to this marriage a son Donald Paul was born on Dec. 30, 1955.

He was inducted into the United States Army on Sept. 9, 1953, and was attached to the 11th Armored Cavalry Division and served his country honorably and faithfully until his honorable discharge on June 9, 1955, at Ft. Knox, Kentucky.

Buck continued his education by graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in Animal Husbandry. After his graduation from Iowa State, they came back to the family farm and began raising Purebred Duroc hogs; showing them at many local fairs and at the Iowa and Minnesota State Fair. He served as a director on the National Duroc Swine Board. He and his father received the 1971 Commercial Producer of the Year award.

In 1978, he began the purebred Simmental Cattle Herd, again showing at fairs and selling in sales. He and his son Donnie received the Iowa Commercial Cattleman of the year award in 1983. He served as a director on the Iowa Cattlemen’s Board. Buck and Beverly also received the Iowa Cattleman of the year award in 2005. They traveled to Montana to compete in the national title.

One award he was very proud of was the first Cattleman of the Year Award presented by the Worth County Cattlemen.

Buck took great pleasure in seeing a young 4-H person purchase a calf and then being successful in showing and building their own herd.

Buck was a member of the Northern Lights Masonic Lodge in Northwood and served as Worshipful Master. He also was a member of the Eastern Star, serving as worthy patron.

Buck and Beverly were members of the Northwood United Methodist Church for 60 years.

Buck loved to visit and had many friends far and wide.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Beverly Pangburn of Northwood; his son, Donnie (Bryn) Pangburn of Northwood; his grandchildren, Grayson Pangburn of Northwood, Paige (Kevin) McClure of Lenexa, Kansas, Peyton Pangburn of Northwood, and Nigel (Lindsey) Millard and family of Orange City; his brother, Dan (Donna) Pangburn of Phoenix, Arizona, and their family, Greg, Beth, Scott, and Debbie; his sister, Nancy (Jonathon) Appleton of Melissa, Texas, and their family, Julia (Mark), and Dianna; his extended family, Susie Pangburn of Des Moines, and her family, Mason and Austin; Gary Pangburn of Northwood, and his son, Riley; Jim (Dayna) Steinman of Northwood, and their family, Jamie and Jake; and Julie (Schultz) Guzman of Phoenix, Arizona; auntie Esther Gaarder of Northwood, and her family, Tom, Linda, Lori, Aletha, and Terry; his nieces; Debbie (Dave) Wallukiat, and their family, Connie and Angie, Lori (Charlie) Williams and many other nieces and nephews; his sister-in-law, Shirley Rygmyr and her family, Tom, Roxy, and Susie; as well as host of other extended family members and friends.

Buck was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Marjorie Pangburn; his niece, Diane Pangburn; and a brother-in-law, Donne Rygmyr.
