Obituary for Dona May Sawin--

Dona May Sawin, 86, rural Northwood, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society in St. Ansgar, Iowa.

A funeral service for Dona will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 27, 2015, at the Northwood United Methodist Church, 1000 First Ave. North, Northwood, with Pastor Shirley Hoffmann Will officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 26, 2015, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

Dona May (James) Sawin was born on July 18, 1929, in rural Northwood, the daughter of Harlan and Alma (Schutz) James. She attended school in Freeborn County District 77. As a young women, she helped clean homes and was a babysitter for several families.

She was united in marriage to Neil Sawin on September 1, 1961, in Myrtle, Minnesota, and has six living children; Ledene, LeRoy, Roger, Daryl, Bruce, and Janice. After their marriage, Dona helped her husband on the farm milking Guernsey cattle and doing the chores. In the 1980’s, she worked in the kitchen at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood until her retirement in 1991.

Dona enjoyed crocheting, crafts, embroidering, gardening especially growing vegetables, latch hook, going on family vacation and bus trips with Marie Peterson. Her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren. She was a member of the Northwood United Methodist Church, and the church circle.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Ledene (Harold) Kamrath of Albert Lea, MN, LeRoy (Cheryl) James of Littleton, CO, Roger Sawin of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Daryl (Mary) Sawin of Decorah, Bruce Sawin of Northwood, and Janice (Thomas) Wallin of Glenville, Minnesota; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; her brother, Melvin (Michele) James of Corona, Calif.; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

Dona was preceded in death by her parents; husband Neil in 1977; and twin boys, Alvin and Kevin Sawin in 1967.
