NORTHWOOD, IOWA - Alton Harold Flatness, 89, Northwood, died Friday, March 13, 2015, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
A funeral service for Alton will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St., Northwood, with the Rev. Judy Converse officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
The family of Alton Flatness has requested that those wishing to give a memorial in his memory may wish to consider memorial to First Lutheran Church in Northwood or to the charity of one’s choice.
Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.
Alton Harold Flatness was born on June 1, 1925, in rural Worth County near Northwood, the son of Hans O. and Anna (Pederson) Flatness. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Alton attended Grove Township country school and graduated from Northwood High School.
He was united in marriage to LaVonne Ellingson on June 19, 1948, and lived their entire 67 years of marriage in the Northwood area. After their marriage they lived on the family farm until moving into Northwood. Alton sold Pioneer Seed for many years before his retirement.
During his retirement years, they enjoyed traveling, fishing trips, and golfing at the Northwood Country Club.
Alton was a quiet but very social man and looked forward to daily visits at the North Star and Corner Post for coffee and conversation with friends and neighbors. His presence will surely be missed.
He was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church and was an usher for many years.
Those left to cherish him memory are his wife of 67 years, LaVonne Flatness of Northwood; his sister, Arlene Hamsund of Wells, Minnesota; his brother, Earl (Marge) Flatness of Winona, Minnesota; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
Alton was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Anna Flatness; father and mother-in-law, Walter and Rebecca Ellingson; three sisters and their spouses, Opal (Russell) Mielke, Nora (Howe) Pacey, and Doris Flatness who died in infancy; brothers and their spouses, LuVerne (Esther) Flatness, Dale (Jean) Flatness, brother-law, Maynard Hamsund; and sister-in law, Donna (Stanley) Wignes.
