NORTHWOOD-Myrtle I. Jones passed away peacefully at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood, on Feb. 24, 2015, at the age of 96.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2015, at Northwood United Methodist Church, 1000 1st Ave. N., with Pastor Shirley Hoffmann Will officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, March 1, 2015, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S., Northwood, and also one hour before services at the church.

Myrtle (Polson) Jones was born June 10, 1918, in Creston, the first child of Jay and Bessie (Tucker) Polson. She attended rural school near Creston, in Union County, and graduated from Creston High School in 1935. She worked in secretarial positions in Creston until 1943 when she moved to Los Angeles, California, and served as a secretary for the Southern Pacific Railroad until June 1945.

She then returned to Creston to await the discharge from the Army of her fiancé of five years, Charles L. Jones, who had been a prisoner of war in Germany and Poland for 27 months during WWII. They were married at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Creston on July 15, 1945. Together they became parents of five children.

The couple purchased a movie theatre in Elma in late 1945. They operated the theatre for nine years until it was destroyed by a fire, along with nearly half of the town’s business district. In 1954, they purchased the theatre in Northwood and operated it until 1960. After closing the theatre, Charlie worked as an auditor with the Iowa Department of Revenue and Myrtle was employed as the first secretary to the principal of Northwood-Kensett High School. She retired in 1976.

Myrtle was a member of the United Methodist Church, Northwood, where she served as Administrative Board secretary for 21 years. She was an active member of Rachel Circle and United Methodist Women. She served on the Meals on Wheels Board and assisted at the Worth County Extension Office. Myrtle and Charlie enjoyed several bus tour trips throughout the United States and Canada and a wonderful trip to Hawaii in their retirement years.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Janis (Chuck) Hendrickson, Lake Mills, Warren Jones, Los Angeles, Eloise (Dwight) Aldrich, Albert Lea, Minnesota, Carol Jones, Stockton, and Lavonne (David) Sporney, St. Paul, Minnesota. She leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Ann (Chris) Gustafson, Carrie (Greg) Buelow, Curt Aldrich, Chad Aldrich, Todd Aldrich, Jared (Leanne) Brackey, Valerie (Jamie) Jepsen, Ryan (Amber) Brackey, Danielle (Dominic) Dinger and Tim (Bridget) LeMoine, as well as 22 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Helen (Jones) Mense, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Charlie; sisters Helen Kline and Doris Conn; brother Kenneth Polson; great-grandson Charlie Carlson; brothers-in-law Reed Kline, Harold Conn, Ralph Jones, Louie Jones, Reno Stofferson, and Lester Mense; and sisters-in-law Rubie Stofferson and Jerry Jones.

Should friends and family desire, the family suggests memorials in Myrtle's memory be made to the Northwood United Methodist Church or the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Myrtle’s family is especially grateful for the kind and loving care she received at the Lutheran Retirement Home since 2008. We will carry her in our hearts always.
