NORTHWOOD, IOWA — Vicky Karen (Proctor) Dokken, 68, Northwood, died Monday, April 8, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

A celebration of life service for Vicky will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, 4108 Killdeer Ave., Kensett, with Pastor Tom Martin officiating. There will be a private family committal service following the service in the Elk Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Kensett.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

Vicky Karen (Proctor) Dokken was born on August 6, 1944, in Mason City, the daughter of Vernon and Helen (Avery) Proctor. Vicky was baptized in 1944, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation in 1958, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. Vicky grew up in Mason City with her two sisters and one brother, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1962, with a scholarship to college. Vicky also graduated from North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City with an A.A. degree and earned her nursing degree also from NIACC.

Vicky met her husband, George Melvin Dokken in Aug. 1962, and was united in marriage on May 2, 1964, in Albert Lea, Minn. Leap year played a big part in their lives; in the year they were born, married and two of their children’s births. They had Darin in 1968, Jonathan in 1972, and Kimberly in 1975.

Vicky was a secretary for Smith & Douglas Seed Company in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and then a secretary for a foundry before having children. They lived in Armstrong, Minnesota, until 1976, before moving to Kensett, to the Dokken family farm. In 1979, she got a job as a librarian aid at the Elementary School in Northwood where she worked for fourteen years. After receiving her LPN, she worked for various nursing homes before she retired.

Vicky enjoyed going to movies with her children and sisters. Sci-fi was her favorite kind of movie to watch. She loved reading books and baking pies. Vicky always loved cats, especially Siamese cats. She had six Siamese cats in her lifetime. She loved life and had a contagious laugh that would make you laugh whether you wanted to or not.

Vicky always made everyone that came to visit feel welcomed and at ease. Vicky especially loved being a grandma and it showed on how she interact with her grandchildren; whether getting on her hands and knees to play whatever game when they were toddlers, taking her grandchildren to the park, school events, and to the swimming pool.

George and Vicky would go camping and fishing with family in Waterville, Minnesota. They made many trips to Canada to go fishing, too. They enjoyed playing cards with the neighbors and had an annual soup meal at their house following the Christmas program at Elk Creek Lutheran Church. Where she got her energy we don’t know. There was never a time she wasn't on the go and making people smile. She loved to walk with friends, family, and her favorite dog, Bear.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, George; sons: Darin (Janelle) and their children, DeeDee and Samantha, Jonathan (Sarah) and their children, Viola and Alexander; and daughter, Kimberly (Jennifer). Also left to cherish her memory are her sisters, Vada (Erling) Myli, Voni (Larry) Frisch; brother, Kurt (Lori) Proctor and their families; George’s family, Mary (Merle) Klinge, Hazel Erickson, James (Arlis) Dokken, Truman (Donna) Dokken, Donald (LaVonne) Dokken, Wilford (Karen) Dokken, Donna Dokken, Rueben Dokken, Juanita (Dutch) Bolinger and their families; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; one niece and one great nephew.
