Northwood, Iowa — Harvey M. Ruffridge, 96, of Northwood, died Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23, at Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood. Interment will take place in Crestlawn Memorial Park, Riverside, Calif., on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to Harvey’s service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Harvey M. Ruffridge was born on April 3, 1916, in Grafton, Iowa, the son of Henry O. and Myra J. (Graves) Ruffridge. He attended school in Grafton, Iowa. Harvey enlisted in the United States Army on March 28, 1941, at Fort Des Moines. He was stationed with the 291st Infantry Division and fought during World War II in the battle of Normandy. On Dec. 3, 1945, Harvey received his honorable discharge from the United States Army at Camp McCoy, Wis.
On January 1, 1952, Harvey was united in marriage to Edna M. Spaudling. Harvey worked for many years as a house mover in California until his retirement in 1980 from Thompson Ability House Movers.
In his free time, he enjoyed fixing, tinkering and working on various projects. Harvey also was an accomplished gardener.
Harvey gave of himself to all those that knew him. He was kind, gentle and unselfish. Harvey always thought of others and put their needs above his own. He was a wonderful example of humility and sacrificial love.
Those grateful in sharing in his life are his son, Michael H. and wife Linda J. Ruffridge, Kenai, Alaska; grandchildren, Justin Ruffridge and his wife, Jessie, Soldotna, Alaska, Brandon Ruffridge, Olmsted Falls, Ohio, and Megan Ruffridge, Watertown, Wis.; brother, Donald Ruffridge, Northwood, Iowa; daughters-in-law, Ruth Shubin, Battle Creek, Iowa, and Carol Shubin, Riverside, Calif; and many nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Harvey is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edna; stepsons, Morris Shubin, Peter Shubin and John Shubin; sisters, Lucille Van Orden, Ruth Millis and Pearl Grundell; and brothers, Myron Ruffridge and Lloyd Ruffridge.
