Life Legacy

Delbert Lee Roberts, 81, of Manly, died Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in Manly.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 E. South Street, Manly, with Pastor Don Preston officiating. Interment will follow in the Manly Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, January 3, 2013, from 4-6 p.m. at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly and will continue one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Delbert’s name in care of his family.

Delbert Lee Roberts was born on April 4, 1931 on a farm near Manly, the son of Arthur J. and Emma (Newbery) Roberts. He attended and graduated from the Manly Community High School before enlisting in the United States Army in 1952.

While in the Army, Delbert honorably served his country during the Korean Conflict as a radar repairman before becoming a clerk. It was during his time in the Army where Delbert learned his bookkeeping skills. Following his honorable discharge Delbert returned to Iowa where he began his accounting career at Soybean Processors of America. In 1986 Delbert retired from Wallace Holland Kastler Schmitz & Co.

In his free time, Delbert loved golfing and cross stitch, they were two of his passions in life. He also enjoyed travelling, slide photography, and genealogy. Delbert had a knack for discovering his family tree and had even written a book detailing his family history.

On August 15, 1996 Delbert was united in marriage to Jeannete (Beauchamp) Johnson after meeting one another while wintering in Texas. They enjoyed 16 years together.

He was a lifelong member of the Elks and the VFW.

Those grateful in sharing in Delbert’s life are his brothers, Arthur “Sonny” Roberts, California, and Donald (Velma) Roberts, Manly; sister in law, Lois Roberts, Nampa, Idaho; step children, Lawrence Johnson, Carol (Harvey) Roxberg, Terry (Gloria) Johnson, and Daryl (Kristen) Johnson, all of Minnesota; seven step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanette; and brother, Earl Roberts.
