HOWARD C. PATTEN
JOICE - Howard C. Patten, 85, died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Burial will be in Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.
Howard C. Patten was born on a farm near Swaledale on Sept. 22, 1915, the son of Roscoe and Grace (Wagner) Patten. He received his education in Swaledale and graduated from Swaledale High School in 1933.
He joined the National Guard in 1940 and was later drafted into the U. S. Army after the beginning of World War II. He served overseas in the European Theatre and during the liberation of France.
After his honorable discharge from the service in November of 1945, he worked for a time in the grocery business and a clothing store. He married Elaine Severson at Fertile Lutheran Church on Oct. 11, 1953. The couple made their home in Mason City for 12 years before moving to Joice in 1966.
Howard worked as a tile setter for Mason City Tile & Marble for many years. He raised feeder pigs for a time and owned and operated his own furnace cleaning business. For several years he delivered motorhomes for Winnebago Industries.
He loved to travel and had visited every state in the continental United States. He loved to read and enjoyed researching his family history. Spending time with his family and friends was special to him. He was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church.
Howard is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Joice; a daughter and her husband, Ginny (Virginia) and Mark Lovik, of Joice; two grandchildren, Nathan and Laura Lovik; a sister, Arcola Hardeman and her husband, Hunter, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; several nieces, a nephew, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Walter Patten; and a sister, June Honeck.
