Russell Leon Anderson was born on June 6, 1914, in Deer Creek Township to Charles and Ida (Anderson) Anderson. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church and attended rural country school in that area.

After completing his schooling, he farmed with his father and brothers until 1941 when he was included in the first group of draftees from Worth County. He served with the Army Air Corps in Africa and Italy until his honorable discharge in 1945.

Russell enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's school events, helping out at the church, ballroom dancing and walks with his wife, Pearl, around Northwood. He also enjoyed farming, loved nature, was a good steward of the land and visiting with his many friends, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a life member of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 and the American Legion in Northwood. He was an honorary member of the Northwood FFA Chapter and an Elks member.
