NORTHWOOD - Joseph A. "Joe" Gullickson, 96, of Northwood, died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St., Northwood, with the Rev. Paul L. Holmer and the Rev. Allan J. Stoa, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church.
The family of Joseph A. "Joe" Gullickson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Joseph A. "Joe" Gullickson memorial fund in his memory.
His body was cremated according to his wishes.
Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.
Joseph A. "Joe" Gullickson was born on Aug. 7, 1903, in Northwood, the son of John A. and Albertina (Anderson) Gullickson. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church in rural Northwood. He attended and received his education in the Northwood School system, graduating from Northwood High School.
After completing his schooling he helped his parents on the family farm two miles southeast of Northwood.
He was united in marriage to Marcella S. Bistline on March 15, 1936, at the First Methodist Church in Mason City. After their marriage, together they farmed for three years near Rock Falls before moving to a farm northeast of Northwood, where they farming for 12 years. They moved for a short time to Denver, Colorado, before moving back to Northwood in September of 1952. He continued to farm in the Northwood area until his retirement in 1970. After his retirement from farming, he continued to work selling crop hail insurance for several years until his retirement.
Joe was an avid fisherman, enjoyed wintering in Texas for 10 years and traveled extensively, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and friends.
During his life, Joe was a member of various civic organizations, including the farmers elevator board in Northwood. He was instrumental in the development of the Northwood Senior Center and recreation center on Central Avenue, was involved in the SW Telephone Company, director Farm Bureau in Worth County, board of directors of the Northwood Creamery and on the board of directors of the Grove Township School District.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and a former member of the First Lutheran Church Council.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Marcella Gullickson, of Northwood; three children, JoAnn Alexander and her husband, William "Bill," of Northwood, Jay Gullickson and his wife, Iva, of Farwell, Minn., and Arlen Gullickson and his wife, Janet, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 11 grandchildren, Kevin Carlson and his wife, Lisa, Kim Kraft and her husband John, Kari Stoa and her husband, Kirk, Jodean Gullickson and his wife, Jill, Judi Gullickson, Jennifer Klimek and her husband, Richard, Amy Frauenholtz and her husband, Todd, Jean Gullickson, Karen Gullickson, Erik O'Shaughnessy and Robin Cornett and her husband, Neal; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Cleo Gullickson, of Northwood; as well as several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Gullickson, who died in 1970; five sisters, Clarissa, Gladys, Alyce, Evelyn and Arlene; and one brother, Donald.
