Robert William Hackbart

GRAFTON, IOWA - Robert William Hackbart, 75, of 2288 380th St., died Thursday, January 28, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack and the Rev. Ernie Thompson officiating. Military rites and interment will be at the Grafton Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Robert W. (Bob) Hackbart was born Feb. 4, 1923, at Grafton, in Worth County, the son of Emil J. and Alvona (Wilke) Hackbart. He was baptized and confirmed April 10, 1938, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, and was a lifetime member.

He attended the public school at Grafton and graduated from Grafton High School in 1942. He farmed with his father until he entered the service. He served in the United States Army from 1944 to Aug. 14, 1946. His time was spent in the South Pacific area in the Occupational Forces.

He married Loretta M. Glassel on Oct. 31, 1948, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton. They lived on the century Hackbart farm all of their 50 years of married life. On Nov. 8, 1998, they celebrated their 50 years of wedded life. Robert retired from farming in 1988, but kept busy helping his son, Neil, farm.

Bob and Loretta were very active in the church and community, where he was a member of the Hollatz-Tabbert Legion Post No. 616, Grafton, Community Action, president of the church council, and served on the Grafton School Board. For many years there has been a reunion with his three army buddies. He was active in high school sports, basketball and baseball, and continued as an avid sports fan.

Cherishing his memory is his wife, Loretta, of Grafton; two sons, Lee, and Neil and his wife, Donna; two grandchildren, Jason Hackbart and his fiancee, Jody Kalvig, and Amy Hackbart and her fiancee, Derrick Powers; a brother, Roger Hackbart and his wife, Lucille, of Golden Valley, Minn.; a sister, Lorraine Julseth and her husband, Truman, of Northwood; a brother-in-law, Rufus Glassel and his wife, Doris, of Plymouth; a nephew, Mark Hackbart and his wife, Monica; five nieces, Susan Hackbart, Constance Meyer and her husband, Terry, Sharon Trousdale and her husband, Bill, Patti Rustad and her husband, Duane, and Terri Sorenson and her husband, Mike; several great-nieces and nephews; and a special pet, "Spike".

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Frances, when she was 3 years old.
