Ruth Marjorie Backhaus was born on July 20, 1921, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, the daughter of George Belar (Bill) and Birdie Mildred (Swank) Craig. She attended rural school in Lincoln Township and graduated from Manly High School in 1938. Immediately after graduation she became employed at the Manly State Bank.

Ruth was united in marriage to Harry Backhaus on August 12, 1940, at the St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Manly by the Rev. Paul Wuebben. In March 2009, she moved to Circle Terrace Assisted Living Apartments in Manly. Ruth had been at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since December 2009.

Ruth enjoyed her life as a homemaker and taking care of her family. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, and jigsaw and crossword puzzles, but her great love was her family and spending time with them. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly.
