HANLONTOWN, IOWA -- Mildred Elizabeth Backhaus, 100, of Hanlontown, Worth county, Iowa, died on Monday, December 8, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

A funeral service for Mildred will be held on Friday, December 12, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church, 302 E. Fourth St., Hanlontown, with the Rev. Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St. in Manly.

Mildred Elizabeth Backhaus was born on August 15, 1908, in Grafton, the daughter of William and Theresa (Kleinwort) Schauer. She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton.

She attended elementary and junior high school in Grafton and graduated from Osage High School in 1927. Mildred furthered her education at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught elementary grades in the rural country schools around Grafton. Mildred was also a telephone operator in Grafton.

She was united in marriage to Alto Backhaus on June 4, 1938, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and to this union they were blessed with three sons: John, Paul, and Stanley. Alto preceded her in death in 1985 and Mildred continued to live on the farm.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown, the WELCA and Circles, and a charter member of Friendly Neighbor Club and the Hanlontown Senior Citizens.

Those left to cherish Mildred's memory are her two sons, John (Linda) Backhaus of Manly, and Stanley (Sherry) Backhaus of Hanlontown; grandchildren, Brent Backhaus and his fianc�e, Lorna Lusic, of Lakeville, Minnesota, Kara (Mike) Spolidoro of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Shawna Backhaus of Rochester, Minnesota, Kyla (Tony) Einertson of Stewartville, Minnesota; great-grandchildren, Megan Backhaus, Kaitlin and Trent Einertson, and Lindsey, Audrey, Macey Spolidoro, Fred (Kirsten) Brauer and Jason Brauer and Michael and Allie Lusic, as well as other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alto; and infant son, Paul.
