Hazel Mildred Kuhlmann, 97, of Northwood, died Tuesday (June 13, 2006) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 16, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

Hazel Mildred Kuhlmann was born on Sept. 17, 1908, the daughter of Rasmus and Helen (Walswick) Flatness. She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Lutheran church in Northwood. She attended and received her education in the Northwood school system, graduating from Northwood High School.

She was united in marriage to Elmer Thompto on June 20, 1937, at the Lutheran church in Northwood. Hazel began working as a telephone operator/secretary for the Northwood Telephone Co. Hazel also worked as a cook for the Northwood-Kensett Community Schools and was owner of Hazel’s Café in Northwood for 10 years before she retired after 22 years of service as a cook for the Northwood-Kensett Community schools.

She was united in marriage to Gaylord Kuhlmann on Dec. 10, 1983, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Hazel enjoyed dancing, playing cards, cooking, learning to play the piano by ear, knitting, going out to dinner, and loved people, but her great love and enjoyment was being with her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Lydia Circle at the church, American Legion and VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Eastern Star in Northwood.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ralph Thompto and his wife, Janet, of Blaine, Minn., Mary Peterson and her husband, Richard, of Owatonna, Minn., and Elizabeth Kenison and her husband, Larry, of Northwood; seven grandchildren, Mark Thompto of Highland Park, Minn., Marcy Olson and her husband, Brad, of Owatonna, Minn., Kim Bremer of Owatonna, Minn., Robb Bremer of Boise, Idaho, Joseph Peterson of Minnetonka, Minn., Christine Hulsing and her husband, Mark, of Northwood, and Nicole Cole and her husband, Michael, of Grafton; 11 great-grandchildren; four step-children, LaVon Kuhlmann of Manly, Marcile Perry and her husband, Dean, of New Ulm, Minn., Beverly Davis and her husband, Glenn, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Doris “Dodie” Belanger and her husband, Jerry, of New Hope, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Flatness of Northwood; as well as many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Elmer Thompto, who died on July 26, 1970; her second husband, Gaylord Kuhlmann, who died on Oct. 22, 1998; a great-grandson: Jarrod Olson; seven sisters and brothers, Ruth, Gladys, Alice, Ida, Melba, Irving and Norman; and a step-daughter-in-law, Joyce Kuhlmann.
