Leonard E. Bailey, 72, of Fertile, died Thursday (March 2, 2006) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile with Lay Pastor David Halverson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Memorials may be made to the Leonard E. Bailey Memorial Fund.

Leonard was born Sept. 14, 1933, to Fitch O. and Edna A. (Turner) Bailey. Leonard was married July 1, 1954, to JoAnn M. Burtness in Fertile, where they lived for many years during the time Leonard was the chief of the Fertile Fire Department. He was also a town council member. He took great pride in the new fire building when it was built.

Leonard delivered coal for the Fertile Lumber Co. for many years until going to Winnebago Industries where he worked until retirement. Leonard also ran the town snow plow for Fertile for many years.

Leonard loved fishing, especially his yearly trips to Canada with family and friends, except for the one where his daughter, Melody, was born early and he ended up riding a bus home. Later on in life, he looked forward to and very much enjoyed his weekly drives just tooling around the lake with his daughter, Jodie.

Leonard really liked living at Oakwood Care Center for more than 10 years. He was a great help with feeding the squirrels and setting the tables for lunch and supper. The family would like to thank the staff of Oakwood Care Center for their years of taking such good care of and “putting up” with Leonard. He felt very much at home there — GOD BLESS YOU AND THANK YOU.

Leonard is survived by and will be greatly missed by his three children, Melody Morse of Clear Lake, Lonnie Bailey of Forest City and special friend, Cheri Schmidt, and Jodie (Rex) McChesney of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Christopher Morse and fiancee, Brandi Rayburn, Jessica (Shawn) Miller, Amanda Morse and fiance, Brad Boesenberg, Angela Litzel, Nicholas (Alison) Bailey, Seth McChesney and Sean McChesney; great-grandchildren, Christina Litzel, McKenzie Miller and Dylan Litzel; and was brother of Douglas Bailey, Donovan (Dorothy) Bailey, Meredith (Fran) Bailey, Marge (Gary) Frandsen, Ramona (Leroy) Baker, Patricia (Jack) Behne; and brother-in-law of Maxine Bailey and Hilda Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Jerry, Raymond and Robert; two sisters, Rovine and infant Janice.
