V. C. Gullickson, the subject of this sketch was born in Northwood, Iowa, on the 23rd day of March, 1879 and received his education in the Northwood public schools, and passed his boyhood days in this city. He was a volunteer soldier in the recent Spanish-American war, being a member of Co. K., 52nd Iowa volunteers. After being mustered out in the fall of 1898 when peace was declared with Spain he re­turned home and soon after entered Highland Park Col­lege, of Des Moines. and remained there during 1898 and 1899. He left for the west in 1902 remaining two years in Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California, a part of the time as hotel clerk at Stites, Idaho, during the excitement of the Thunder Mountain gold rush. He then went prospecting for gold in the Bitter Root mountains, cross­ing the range into Montana, spent four months in Port­land. Oregon, and nine months in the Cyanide gold quartz mill of the North Pole Mine, near Sumpter, a mine having an annual output of $850,000 in gold bullion and owned by Lord Behring of England. The remainder of the time in the west was spent at Seattle and San Francisco.

Since returning to Northwood he has been engaged in overseeing farms of the estate. He has recently entered the real estate business, his specialty being city property in Iowa and adjoining states.

Mr. Gullickson is the youngest son of Stephen Gullickson one of the pioneer merchants of Northwood. Stephen Gullickson. a native of Norway, landed in America with one dollar in his pocket, and at his death in 1895 he had become a wealthy man. The mother. Mrs. Permilla (Abraham) Gullickson, presides over the family home in Northwood. Besides the subject of this sketch the family consists of four sisters and two brothers, as follows: Ella, now the wife of Rev. O. G. U. Siljan. of Madison, Wis.: Minnie, teacher of languages in Augustana college, at Can­ton. S. D.; May, taking the course in the deaconess train­ing school in Chicago; Amy at home and Seymour and William in Northwood.
