A. Holland was born in Green county, Wis., Sept. 1st, 1860. In 1880, at the age of 20 years, he went to Albert Lea, Minn., where he secured employment in a wholesale and retail grocery house. In 1882 he went to Glenville, Minn., and engaged in the general merchandise trade, un­der the firm name of Gage, Holland & Hayden Co. In 1891 he went to Norway and spent six months visiting in the home of his ancestors. In 1892 he came to Northwood and purchased the store of Johnson & Klove. Shortly thereafter he formed a partnership with T. O. Lund under the firm name of Holland & Lund. In 1898 Mr. Lund sold his interest to J. J. Page, since which date the firm name has been Holland & Page.

In 1899 Mr. Holland erected the pretentious block which contains the dry goods department, at an approximate cost of $12,000. It is two stories high with a 25 foot frontage and a mean depth of 100 feet. The building occupied by the clothing department was built the same year, being modeled on the same plan and hav­ing the same area of floor space.

On October 29th, 1902. Mr. Holland was united in mar­riage In Miss Tillie Swensrud, daughter of E. E. Swensrud of Gordonsville, Minn. In polities Mr. Holland is a republican, ever ready to do his duty as a citizen, but more inclined toward business than toward official life.
