One of the best known and important institutions in Northwood is the Madson Wagon Shops. For 27 years this factory has been in operation manufacturing a brand of wagons with a reputation because they are made right. Their specialty is the broad tire farm wagon now coming into such general use.

Hans Madson, the veteran wagon maker, was born in Denmark on Sept. 23, 1845. When he became of age in 1866 he emigrated to America, locating in Racine. Wis., there he remained but six months. Then he removed to Kasson, Minn., remaining there until the spring of 1870 working at his trade as wagonmaker. In 1870 he moved to lona, Iowa, and became a member of the firm of Kruger & Madson. In the spring of 1880 he came to Northwood, establishing the firm of Madson & Enger which continued for five years. For the past 22 years he has conducted the business alone.

He was married in Ionia. Iowa, on the 28th day of August, 1872, to Miss Catherine Knoll. Five children have been born to them, L. F., manager of the Northwood Electric Light Plant; C. H., engaged with his father in the wagon trade: Frank, now residing at Tagus, N. D., and Elsie and May, both employed in the Northwood post office.

For the past 18 years Mr. Madson has been a member of the Northwood school board, a position to which he was re-chosen at the last election by a unanimous vote.
