O. V. Eckert, one of the prominent business men of Northwood, was born in Ulster Co., N. Y., Sept. 18, 1838. His grandfather, Solomon Eckert, was a soldier in the War of 1812. His parents were Abram S. and Sarah A. (De Groff) Eckert. They were the parents of nine children, six of whom are still living. O. V. Eckert was reared on a farm, receiving a liberal education. In 1856 he came to Wisconsin with his parents, and in the winter of 1859, he crossed the Mississippi river. In 1865 he was married to Lucinda Walker, of Clinton Co., N. Y. Four children have blessed this union-Clara, Blanche, Florence and Ethel. In the winter of 1871, Mr. Eckert came to Worth Co., Iowa, where he has been extensively engaged in buying grain and live stock, as the firm of Eckert & Williams. Mr. Eckert is one of those men that began life poor, but by judicious management, has accumulated a fine property. He has a comfortable home in Northwood. O. V. Eckert was horn in Ulster County, N. Y. Sept. 18, 1838. He came of good old American stock His grandfather. Solomon Eckert. having been a soldier in the war of 1812. His father's name was Abram D. Eckert. and his mother's maiden name was Sarah A. De Groff. His parents were farmer folks and he was one of nine children. He was given a fine education. In 1856 he removed with his parents to Wisconsin. In I859 he came to Iowa, being engaged for some time, as a traveling salesman. In I865 he was married in Winneshiek county, to Miss Lucinda Walker, who was a native of Clinton county. N. Y. In I870 Mr. and Mrs. Eckert made their home in Osage, and on December 26, 1871 re­moved to Northwood where they have ever since lived. Upon his arrival in Northwood Mr. Eckert became the junior member of the firm of Gordon A Eckert. The fol­lowing year he succeeded to the entire business and formed a partnership with Mr. Williams, of Lake Mills, under the firm name of Eckert & Williams. This firm today has a large machin­ery business at both Northwood and Lake Mills. It also buys grain and hogs and sells coal and wood at both places. It al­so has an extensive grain busi­ness at Kensett and Gordonsville and farming interests in both Minnesota and Dakota. Mr. Eckert was also one of the organizers and chief stock hold­ers in the First National Bank of Northwood. He now holds the position of vice president of that institution. Upon the or­ganization of the Northwood Commercial Union Mr. Eckert was chosen its first president. At the expiration of his term he was unanimously re-elected. In addition to his many business activities Mr. Eckert has always found time to devote to active church work. He was a member of a committee of three that accom­plished the building of the Methodist church in Northwood He has ever been one of its stanchest members and most liberal contributors.
To Mr, and Mrs. Eckert four daughters have bee born born, all who grown to womanhood and gone forth into the world to justify the tender and loving care that have been bestowed on them. Clara is now the wife of Superintendent W. C. Cobb of Clouquet, Minn.; Blanche is the wife of Atty. Zollinger, a member of the bar in Portland Oregon; Florence Geraldine is the wife of Prof. O. A. Bosserman, who is at the head of a business college in Spokane, Washington; Ethel is at school in Detroit, Michigan, just completing a course in music with a view of becoming vocal instructor in public school work.
