A. J. Dwelle was born in Washington county, N. Y.. March , 16. 1836, being one of a family of ten children. He came to Worth county in 1859 and settled in Northwood forming a partnership with his brother, Lemuel, who had preceded him on his westward journey by some two years. Together they entered the milling business and later the real estate business, in both of which pursuits they were so successful as to make a modest fortune. In all public benefactions A. J. was a co-laborer with his brother and partner, until no one thought of starting a subscription list for any worthy cause without having it headed by Dwelle Bros. In l879 when the fiercest county seat battle was waged and a monster fund was made necessary to protect the interests of Northwood. the firm of Dwelle Bros, contributed more than two-fifths of the total sum raised.

In June 1859 Mr. Dwelle was married to Miss Sarah M. Walker, the service being performed in New York state, the journey westward being the wedding trip.

Mr. Dwelle died in Northwood on Dec. 6, 1902. Mrs. Dwelle died at Little Falls. Minn., March 26, 1907.

When A. J. Dwelle died a vacant place was left in the community which has never been filled.
