A. J. Dwelle was an early settler of Worth county, being one of its prominent businessmen. He was born in Washington Co., N. Y., March 16, 1826. He is the son of Alphonso and Elizabeth (Tefft) Dwelle. They were married in 1823, and had six sons and four daughters. The father still lives in the old homestead where his father Abner settled in 1790. The mother died in 1868. Mr. Alphonso Dwelle in early life was an old line whig, but at the organization of the republican party, affiliated with it, and took great interest in the party. A. J. resided on a farm and received a good education. In June, 1859, he married Sarah M. Walker, emigrating at once to Worth Co., Iowa. He is a practical business man, a keen observer and by close application has acquired a competency, and well merits his business reputation. A. J. Dwelle was born in Washington county, N. Y.. March , 16. 1836, being one of a family of ten children. He came to Worth county in 1859 and settled in Northwood forming a partnership with his brother, Lemuel, who had preceded him on his westward journey by some two years. Together they entered the milling business and later the real estate business, in both of which pursuits they were so successful as to make a modest fortune. In all public benefactions A. J. was a co-laborer with his brother and partner, until no one thought of starting a subscription list for any worthy cause without having it headed by Dwelle Bros. In l879 when the fiercest county seat battle was waged and a monster fund was made necessary to protect the interests of Northwood. the firm of Dwelle Bros, contributed more than two-fifths of the total sum raised.
In June 1859 Mr. Dwelle was married to Miss Sarah M. Walker, the service being performed in New York state, the journey westward being the wedding trip. Mr. Dwelle died in Northwood on Dec. 6, 1902. Mrs. Dwelle died at Little Falls. Minn., March 26, 1907. When A. J. Dwelle died a vacant place was left in the community which has never been filled.
