Elling Ellingson, who carries on general agricultural pursuits on section 15, Barton township, Worth county, was born on the 22d of November, 1866, in Newburg township, Mitchell county, a son of Bjorn and Betsy O. (Hanson) Ellingson. The father, Bjorn Ellingson, is a native of Norway. He was born January 1, 1841, and in 1866, when twenty-five years of age, emigrated to America, settling in Newburg township, Mitchell county, where he resided for four years, and then removed to Barton township, Worth county. He was married in 1866 to Betsy O. Hanson and they have since traveled life's journey happily together, covering a period of about fifty-two years. All of the family are connected with the Norwegian Lutheran church and Mr. Ellingson gives his political allegiance to the republican party. He is now living retired in Carpenter, Mitchell county, and has reached the age of seventy-six years, while his wife is now seventy-one years of age. Elling Ellingson spent his youthful days in Mitchell county to the age of four years and was then brought to Worth county by his parents, who settled on section II, Barton township, where he remained upon the home farm, early becoming familiar with all the duties and labors that fall to the lot of the agriculturist. He pursued his education in the public schools, which he attended through the winter seasons, and in the summer months aided in the work of the fields. He then remained upon the home farm to the time of his marriage, which was celebrated in 1893, when he removed to his present place of residence on section 15, Barton township, having previously purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land on which he erected good buildings. He has since carried on the work of improving and developing his farm, which he has carefully and systematically cultivated, transforming it into one of the valuable properties of the county. It presents a neat and attractive appearance and indicates the careful supervision and progressive methods of the owner. To his original purchase Mr. Ellingson has added from time to time as opportunity has offered until he is now the owner of three hundred and twenty acres.
On June 27, 1893, Mr. Ellingson was united in marriage to Miss Serena Knutson, a daughter of Edward and Tena (Steile) Knutson and a native of Decorah, Iowa. Her father was born in Norway and came to the United States in the early '50s, settling in Decorah, where he wedded Tena Steile, who had crossed the Atlantic to America in the early '50s. Mr. and Mrs. Ellingson have become the parents of two children, Benny and Emily B.
In politics Mr. Ellingson is a republican and has held a number of local offices, serving as township clerk, trustee, road supervisor and constable. He and his family are members of the Norwegian Lutheran church. In addition to his home farm he has become the owner of some town lots in Northwood. He concentrates his efforts and attention, however, upon his agricultural interests, carrying on general farming and at the same time raising full blooded Poland China hogs. Both branches of his business are proving profitable because his labors are wisely and carefully directed. He is systematic and thorough in everything that he undertakes and his unfaltering diligence and perseverance have been salient features in his growing success.
