M.L. "Stub" Gray 1920-2000

M.L. "Stub" Gray, 79, of Sioux City died Friday, March 17, 2000.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev, Doug Klein officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Danbury Catholic Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 336 of Danbury. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Gray was born Sept. 10, 1920 in Danbury, the son of Millard and Alma (Iddings) Gray. He was raised in Danbury and graduated from Danbury Public High School in 1936.

He served in the U.S. Army with the 517th Parachute Combat Team during World War II. His awards and decorations include five Campaign Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart Medal.

He married M. Denice Fitzpatrick on June 30, 1947, in Sioux City. She died Dec. 19, 1991, in Sioux City.

He was employed as an engineer with Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 35 years. He retired in 1981.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, American Legion Post 336 of Danbury, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 58 of Sioux City and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, where he was a former secretary and treasurer. He served on the Woodbury County Conservation board.

Survivors include Donna Turner of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Frank and Cindy of Sioux City and Bill and Cheryl of Ida Grove, Iowa; three daughters, Joanne and her husband, Phil Ballard of Lakewood, Colo., Genny Ulven of Fremont, Neb., and Carol and her husband, Dick Ellis of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Angela, Brandon and Sarah Gray, Travis Gray Koenig and Eric, Mark, Ingrid and Evan Ulven; a great-grandson; a brother and his wife, Frank and Venesta Gray of Lincoln: and a sister, Nell Jensen of Denver. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Rosemary; and brothers and sisters.

Pallbearers will be Rick Schneider, Bob Bennett, Jack Turner, Chris Furner, Harold Pettit and Charlie Winegardner.

A memorial has been established in his name for the Woodbury County Conservation Foundation.
