James "Jim" E. Moore

September 30, 1939 - March 14, 2025

James E. Moore, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully at his home in Sioux City, Iowa, on Friday, March 14, 2025, at the age 85. The son of John Marvin and Janice (Wallen) Moore. Janice later went on to wed Jens (Red) Iverson and became Janice Iverson. Jim was born on September 30, 1939, in Sioux City. He dedicated his life to education and family, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who knew him.

On October 17, 1959, Jim was united in marriage to Judith "Judy" Bauerly in Sioux City. He and Judy grew up on the West side of town, just down the street from each other and were high school sweethearts. Together, they were blessed with four children. Judy and Jim celebrated 65 years of marriage together and often could be seen on the Perry Creek trails walking and still holding hands.

Jim grew up in a large and lively family of 11 siblings, six girls and six boys. Jim cared deeply for his family and they found ways to stay connected through the years by gathering around Janice and Red, celebrating holidays together, playing a rowdy game of cards (the large table at grandma's was always full, very loud and a lot of laughter), bowling, going fishing in South Dakota, Minnesota, Alaska, Canada and playing golf.

Jim's early education culminated at Central High School in Sioux City, where he distinguished himself not only academically but also as a gifted athlete. His accomplishments in track secured him a scholarship to Drake University, where he further honed his skills, setting the 1/4 mile state record at the Drake Relays and eventually earning his teaching degree and he was inducted into the Iowa Hall of Fame for Track and Field

His teaching career began at Carroll, Iowa Community Schools, but it was upon the opening of West High School in Sioux City (1972) that Jim truly made his mark as a math teacher (geometry and algebra). His dedication to his students extended beyond the classroom; he also graciously shared his knowledge and passion for athletics as a coach for both track and cross country at West High for over 25 years. Jim's kindness, patience and authenticity inspired countless students, making him a respected figure in the community.

Despite his many accomplishments, Jim remained grounded and genuine, epitomizing the values he lived by. He was a patient and loving individual, whose kindness touched so many people. Outside the classroom, he enjoyed a wide range of hobbies, from being a Golden Gloves Boxing champion in his youth to enjoying fishing, bowling, and golfing. An avid bowler, Jim proudly recorded several 300 games throughout his time and was a member of the United States Bowling Association for most of his life.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Judy, of Sioux City; three sons, Ron (Carol) Moore, of Sioux City, Don (Suzy) Moore, of Lincoln City, Ore., Rick (Lori) Moore, of Sioux City; and daughter, Jayne (Jim) Hettinger, of Sioux City. He took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to Nick Moore, Sam (Tony Riedesel) Moore, Andy (Sara) Moore, Ashley (Grant) Kirkes, Simon Moore, Libby Moore, Ian Hettinger, Lexi Hettinger, Lucas Hettinger, Brandon (Mariah) Moore and Aubreyann Moore, as well as 11 great-grandchildren; three and a half great-great-grandchildren. Jim is also survived by eight siblings, Betty Leckband, Jerry (Rhonda) Moore, Kathy Moore, Penny (John Treglia) Noble, Tim (Deb) Iverson, Bob Iverson, Tom (Cindy) Moore, and Jackie Iverson; along with brother-in-law, Bill Bauerly. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bob (Gloria) Moore, Linda (Tiny) Foster, Sandy (Gary) Dickman; and brother-in-law George Leckband.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Rhonda Capron and Hospice for their compassion and care.

To honor Jim's memory, a visitation will be held at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7:15 p.m. A Mass in celebration of his life will be held at Holy Cross Parish - St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Ellendale Cemetery, rural Merrill, Iowa.
