LaVone Maxine Meeves, the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Callaghan) Eichhorn, was born on February 13, 1924. She attended the College Corner School through 8th grade and then went to Holly Springs High School graduating with the class of 1941. LaVone went on to business training school in Sioux City, Iowa, then worked in the office at United Wholesales.
On February 10, 1946, LaVone married John C. Meeves and became a farmer’s wife. They were blessed with two children, Gaylen and Marlene. The couple farmed in the Hornick-Smithland, Iowa, area until 1988 and then moved to Smithland. John passed away April 24, 2007.
LaVone raised 400 chicks per year, had a huge garden and flower patch, and could always be found working outside. After moving to town, you still saw her in a huge flower patch and big garden. She loved doing crafts and going to craft fairs. LaVone also loved to play Rummikub with her friend Betty and enjoyed her daily phone visits with her friend Jeanette. LaVone was a member of the Smithland quilting group and former treasurer of the cemetery society. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory include her daughter Marlene Hinds of Elk Point, SD; grandchildren Isaac, Holly (Justin), Levi (Karla), Donnie, and Gaylene; 8 great-grandchildren; extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Minnie Eichhorn; husband John Meeves; son Gaylen Meeves; sisters Arlene McNear and Verna Ahl; and son-in-law John Hinds.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Maple Heights Nursing Home for the excellent care they provided to LaVone during her stay there.
