SIOUX CITY - Sandra L. "Sandy" Kangal, 85, of Sioux City passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at her residence. Following Sandy's wishes, there will be no services held. Meyer Brothers Funeral Homes is assisting the family.
Sandy was born on March 19, 1939 in Omaha, Nebraska, to Carol and Violet (Light) Shattuck. She was a Sioux City resident throughout her life, graduating from East High School and, later, Morningside College where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. On March 22, 1975 Sandy married Yilma "Turk" Kangal. The two divorced in 2006.
She was a teacher for the Sioux City Community School District for 35 years, teaching 4th grade at both Sunnyside and Bryant Elementary Schools. After her retirement, Sandy was a member of the Sioux City Retired Educators.
Sandy loved music. In her free time, she enjoyed playing piano and going to the symphony. Those who knew her will remember her etiquette, cleanliness, and sharp sense of humor. Her nieces and nephews meant the world to her, and she loved them fiercely as though they were her own children.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Marie Shattuck of Sioux City; nieces: Debbie (Shattuck) and Jim Tufts of Bondurant, Iowa, Kim (Shattuck) and Greg George of Elk Point, South Dakota, and Karen (Shattuck) Harrison and Dan Davis of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; nephew, Brad Shattuck (Nhon Tran) of Atlanta, Georgia; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carol and Violet; and two brothers: Richard Shattuck and Bill "Shad" Shattuck.
Memorial donations in Sandy's honor may be directed to either the Sioux City Public Schools Foundation or the Sioux City Symphony.
The Shattuck family wishes to thank the Sioux City Police Department and the Sioux City Fire Department, including Liz and Sarah with the SCFD EMS crew, for their assistance and care.
